History

Hundreds of Projects Over 45 Years

Dedication. Integrity.

In 1966, Max Pinsley came to California to sell siding products and the Federal Modernization and Building Company was born. The company evolved into a respected residential remodeling company led by his son, David Pinsley. With Larry Hayden as a partner, David continued to establish the company in the East Bay.

In 1987, Larry became sole owner. Throughout his career, Larry referred to clients as “respected friends” and completed an extremely rich history of projects throughout the East Bay, including the Last Chance Saloon at Jack London Square. After 30 years at Federal Building Company, Larry was ready to retire. To ensure Federal Building’s continued success and dedication to clients, employees, and colleagues, Larry sought new leadership, and found it in visionary and recognized industry leader Chris Avant of Canyon Construction.

Chris purchased Federal Building Company in 2007. As its CEO, Chris has preserved the company’s heritage and superb team of designers and builders – while keeping an eye on progressive technologies, sustainable building practices, and new materials in our ever-evolving industry. Chris appointed Jay Cravagan as president of Canyon Design Build to oversee day-to-day operations.

Federal Building Company changed its name to Canyon Design Build in June 2010. Only the name is new. Canyon Design Build continues to bring dedication and integrity to every home remodeling project – big or small, simple or complex.

“The reason for the name change is to make it a seamless part of the Canyon Construction family and allow our clients to benefit from the economies and knowledge base from both entities.” – Chris Avant, Owners and CEO Canyon Design Build

"Our history allows us to offer precision and best practices to all out clients. We share and learn from every job, every day." – Jay Cravagan, President Canyon Design Build
